18 year old Matt Welsh of the Charlottetown Islanders has turned in a remarkable 1st half to his 3rd Quebec Major Junior Hockey League seaosn. The Halifax native has backstopped the Islanders to a league leading 20 saves and is among the league leaders in save percentage .919 and goals against 2.35. He’s allowed the Islanders to win games and suprise opponents in a year which was suppose to be a rebuild for the franchise. Welsh has been the team MVP in the first half and it could be argued he may be the league MVP. If the franchise record holder for most wins (55) has as good a 2nd half, he certainly will be among the candidates for league MVP. John Moore caught up with the Halifax Macs alum and coach Jim Hulton prior to a 2-0 shutout win over the Mooseheads in Halifax. Welsh was the 1st star with 36 saves.
